2009 KaiserEDU.org Essay Contest is now CLOSED. 

We appreciate all contestants for taking the time to submit essays. 

2009 Essay Contest Winners

Topic:

President Obama has stated that reforming the health care system is one of his top priorities, and there is broad interest from policymakers and the public in making a change. During the campaign, he outlined a framework for reforming health care. The essay should cover: what elements of his plan should be prioritized given the current economic crisis, what elements are most likely to garner support and which ones will be most challenging and why?

Undergraduate and graduate students will be judged separately and the winners will receive $1,000.

CONTEST RULES:
• DEADLINE: All essays must be submitted by March 2, 2009, 5pm EST. Entries will not be accepted after this time.
• Submissions must be from students enrolled in a degree-granting program at a university or college at the time of submission.  Undergraduate and graduate students are eligible.
• Essays submitted for consideration must be original work and must be prepared by one author only.
• Only ONE submission per person.
• Entries must be submitted ONLINE ONLY. No emails will be accepted.

**Failure to follow any of these rules may lead to disqualification from the contest. **

ESSAY REQUIREMENTS:
• Essays must not exceed 1,000 words in length.  Do NOT bold, underline, or use charts, tables, or graphs.
• Entries must be in English.
• Essays must be double-spaced and no smaller than 11pt font.
• Each page must be numbered.
• References should be cited as endnotes and do not count towards 1,000-word limit.
• Do NOT put your name on the essay or on the filename. Your name should only be on the online registration form.
• Documents should be written in Microsoft Word 2003, Text or PDF.
• Documents must be formatted and footnoted before submitting online. Once you submit your essay, you will not be able to edit.
• Entrants will receive a confirmation email within 24 hours of submission.

REVIEW and EVALUATION:
Submissions from undergraduates and graduates will be judged separately.  Contest entries will be judged separately by a panel of professionals with experience in health policy and politics, including Sheila Burke, Harvard University; Judy Feder, Georgetown University; Dean Rosen, Mehlman Vogal Castagnetti, Inc.; and the Kaiser Family Foundation's Drew Altman and Diane Rowland.

PRIZES:
Awarded to the top undergraduate and graduate student entries.
• First Prize: $1,000
• Second Prize:  $500

Winners will be notified by April 15, 2009. In addition to the monetary prizes, the winning essays will be posted on kaiserEDU.org and announced via email to subscribers of the website. The winning students’ schools will also be notified.

By participating in this contest, entrants (a) agree to be bound by the CONTEST RULES and ESSAY REQUIREMENTS outlined above and by the decisions of Kaiser Family Foundation, which are final in all matters relating to the contest; and (b) acknowledge compliance with the CONTEST RULES and ESSAY REQUIREMENTS outlined above. By entering the contest, you confirm that the essay submission is your own original creation. All submissions become the property of the Kaiser Family Foundation and will not be returned.

Employees (and their immediate families, i.e., parents, spouse, children, siblings, grandparents, step-parents, step-children and step-siblings) of the Kaiser Family Foundation are not eligible to enter this contest.  Prize winners of the previous kaiserEDU Essay Contests are not eligible to enter this contest.

The Kaiser Family Foundation reserves the right to contact faculty or administrators at any entrant’s school to confirm enrollment and eligibility. In the event that enrollment cannot be confirmed, the entrant may be disqualified from the contest.

Contest winners agree to, except where prohibited, allow the Kaiser Family Foundation to post their essays on the kaiserEDU.org website and use their names and essays in promotional materials for publicity purposes without additional compensation. The Kaiser Family Foundation will give appropriate attribution to the authors in all such cases.

KaiserEDU.org was developed to provide access to resources and information on major areas of health care policy for students and faculty in health policy and related disciplines, as well as for anyone interested in learning more about health policy.
