United States-based Opportunities

AIDS Action
AIDS Action is a national organization dedicated to the development, implementation and advocacy of sound AIDS policies and programs.  AIDS Action sponsors the Pedro Zamora Fellowship, an 8-26 week fellowship at their offices in Washington, DC.  Zamora Fellows are actively involved in researching and analyzing national health policies related to the HIV/AIDS epidemic.

AIDS Action Committee of Massachusetts
The AAC is a not-for-profit, community based health organization that provides care to those living with HIV and AIDS, educates the public about how to prevent transmission and advocates for fair and effective AIDS policy.  The AAC has a variety of unpaid internships in Boston ranging from public policy to research to web design.

AID Atlanta
AID Atlanta, a non-profit organization that provides education and support to people living with HIV/AIDS, accepts volunteers for all of their programs including community outreach, testing and counseling services and office support.  The organization also offers an internship which requires a commitment of at least 20 hours a week for 4 weeks.

The AIDS Foundation of Chicago
The AIDS Foundation of Chicago offers six different intern positions aimed at helping students start a career fighting AIDS.  Interns work in the AFC office on policy issues for at least eight consecutive weeks and may receive a nominal stipend.  All internships are located in Chicago.

AIDS Project LA
The AIDS Project LA offers a variety of internships in areas such as mental health service, special events, media relations and case management.  Interns must commit to working 20 hours a week for 3-6 months.

American Friends Service Committee
The AFSC offers the Sam Cox Youth Internship for a student to work with the San Francisco chapter of the AFSC and spend two months designing and implementing a project related to HIV/AIDS concerns. 

American Medical Students Association
The American Medical Student's Association organizes the AIDS Advocacy Network, an network of health professional students concerned about HIV/AIDs.  The Network sponsors annual leadership seminars to educate, train and organize Network members to become leaders in the fight against AIDs.

Clinton Foundation - HIV/AIDS Initiative
The Clinton Foundation aims to assist in the implementation of large-scale, integrated care, treatment, and prevention programs in HIV/AIDS by partnering with governments around the world to develop operational business plans to scale-up national HIV/AIDS care and treatment.  The Clinton Foundation offers internships in its Quincy, MA and New York City offices.  Interns provide general administrative support  as well as wide-ranging research support, for example, on partner countries, pharmaceutical industry, and current policy/medical developments. 

Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières
Médecins Sans Frontières (also known as Doctors Without Borders or MSF) delivers emergency aid to victims of armed conflict, epidemics, and natural and man-made disasters, and to others who lack health care due to social or geographical isolation. MSF has a U.S. based internship program which provides practical administrative and clerical work experience along with a basic introduction to the field of international medical humanitarian aid and advocacy.  Internships take place in the New York office and are unpaid, but work-study funds and or course credit will be available for those who qualify, as well as some transportation reimbursement. A minimum time commitment of twenty hours per week is required for all internships.

Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation
The Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation works toward eradicating pediatric AIDS and provides care and treatment to people with HIV/AIDS, and supports research on new treatments for HIV/AIDS and other serious and life-threatening pediatric illnesses.  The Foundation seeks college students to organize fundraising on their college campuses as well as to assist with planning external fundraisers.

Ebony Sisters Campaigning for AIDS Prevention Education (ESCAPE)
ESCAPE is a volunteer-based HIV/AIDS prevention organization dedicated to improving the lives of African American women, Native American women, their families, and teens.  Volunteers provide community peer education, ‘DEBI’ training on ‘SISTA’, and prevention case management (PCM)/Comprehensive Risk Counseling & Services.  For more information, please contact ESCAPE at 614-370-3583 and ask for Sherri Smith or email BRCHsAndCEUs@aol.com.

Gay Men’s Health Crisis
The Gay Men’s Health Crisis in New York City offers internships for high school, undergraduate and graduate level students.  Possible intern placements include the crisis hotline, public policy, communications or marketing departments.

Global AIDS Alliance
The Global AIDS Alliance is a non-profit organization in Washington, DC striving to strengthen the global response to the HIV/AIDS epidemic.  The Alliance offers an unpaid policy and communications internship for undergraduate and graduate students to help support policy analysis and media outreach.

Global Health Council
Global Health Council (GHC) conducts analysis and advocacy on major international health crises, including the HIV/AIDS pandemic.  GHC has 12-week, paid internship positions for students in its Washington DC and White River Junction, VT offices.  Intern responsibilities include research, legislative analysis, fundraising, and advocacy.

Good Samaritan Project
The Good Samaritan Project provides care for a diverse community of individuals affect by HIV/AIDS, located in Kansas City, Missouri. The group offers volunteer opportunities to develop relationships with those living with HIV/AIDS by creating support groups and special events.

International AIDS Empowerment
International AIDS empowerment is a non-profit organization in El Paso, Texas staffed by people who are HIV positive.  They offer numerous programs including a treatment advocacy program, support groups for HIV+ women and HIV Counseling and Testing. National AIDS Fund – AmeriCorps
The National AIDS Fund (NAF) AmeriCorps Program focuses on the HIV/AIDS epidemic in the United States.   Members of NAF AmeriCorps serve as full-time employees for one year at an HIV/AIDS service agency and can take on a variety of roles, depending on interest and skills.  Positions include HIV/AIDS prevention educators, HIV antibody testers and counselors, food service providers for people with HIV/AIDS, case managers, and caregivers for people with HIV/AIDS.

National Minority AIDS Council
The National Minority AIDS Council accepts high school and college students to volunteer at their offices in Washington, DC.

Philadelphia FIGHT
Philadelphia FIGHT has internship opportunities for students in undergraduate programs and medical school. Internships are available on an unpaid, school credit basis during the school year and on a paid basis during the summer. Interns may work at the Johnathan Lax Immune Disorders Treatment center for people living with HIV/AIDS.

Project Inform
This national nonprofit is a community based organization in San Francisco which provides information on the diagnosis and treatment of HIV and advocates for enlightened regulatory, research and funding policies.  Project Inform has a number of unpaid internship and volunteer positions available.

Shanti
Shanti offers a continuum of services designed to meet the practical and emotional support needs of people living with HIV/AIDS. These services include care coordination, practical assistance and emotional support provided by trained peer support volunteers, transportation to medical/social services appointments, peer and treatment advocacy, and social activities.

United Nations Development Programme - Human Development Report Office
The Human Development Report Office (HDRO) is an office within the United Nations that writes the annual Human Development Reports (HDRs), UNDP's flagship publication. HRDO offers unpaid internships that are research-oriented as well as internships in communications and outreach.  HDRO seeks applicants with considerable experience in research, statistical analysis, or media relations.

University of San Francisco AIDS Health Project
The AIDS Health Project offers a one year internship to a college graduate committed to public service.  This internship is designed to both train a new generation of AIDS health care advocates and to help the intern explore public health, non-profit management and social service.  They also offer short term, unpaid internships involved in various aspects of AIDS related research, counseling and care. 

Whitman-Walker Clinic
The Whitman-Walker Clinic in Washington, DC, offers a wide range of services to HIV + clients.  Interns are needed to help with art therapy groups, lesbian health services, research and evaluations of programs and office assistance.

The World Bank
The World Bank is one of the largest financial institutions focused on international development.  The World Bank sponsors a host of projects around the world that aim to reduce the impact of HIV/AIDS.  The Bank's summer internship program places graduate students in a range of fields, including economics, finance, public health, education, nutrition, and population in positions that focus on international development projects.  Most positions are located in Washington, DC, are a minimum of four weeks in duration, and include a salary.
