The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) National Center for Health Statistics is releasing selected estimates of health insurance coverage for the civilian noninstitutionalized U.S. population based on data from the 2007 National Health Interview Survey (NHIS), along with comparable estimates from the 1997-2007 NHIS.

This snapshot uses data from the 1997, 1999, and 2002 rounds of the National Survey of America’s Families (NSAF) to examine changes in health insurance coverage and health status by race and ethnicity.

Employee Benefit Research Institute. Sept 2008. Sources of Health Insurance and Characteristics of the Uninsured: Analysis of the March 2008 Current Population Survey.
This annual report examines the status of health insurance coverage in the United States, providing historic data through 2007 on the number and percentage of nonelderly Americans with and without coverage. It discusses the trends in coverage and highlights characteristics of the uninsured.

This chartbook presents analysis of national data on health insurance coverage based on a county's proximity to a large urban area. It answers questions of how much health insurance coverage differs among people living in rural vs. urban communities, as well as, the differences in socio-economic and employment characteristics of those living in rural vs. urban counties.

This fact sheet presents coverage rates for women ages 18-64 and highlights patterns of coverage. It also discusses recent coverage trends and improving access to coverage.

Kaiser Family Foundation. State Health Facts Online - Health Coverage and the Uninsured
This Web site provides health insurance coverage information for each state, including characteristics of each state’s uninsured population.

State Coverage Initiatives. Jan 2007. About Coverage: Health Insurance in the United States.
This report includes the basics of health coverage, who the uninsured are, why they are uninsured, what options exist to cover them, and why it has become so expensive to offer or provide health insurance.

U.S. Census Bureau. Aug 2008. Income, Poverty, and Health Insurance Coverage in the United States: 2007.   
This report, issued by the Census Bureau, is an annual update on the number of Americans with and without health insurance coverage. The report includes national and state estimates, based on the 2008 Annual Social and Economic Supplement to the Current Population Survey.

Public Opinion

Citizens Health Care Working Group. Sept 2006. What Americans Told the Working Group.
The Working Group, formed as part of the Medicare Prescription Drug Act in 2003, held health care community meetings throughout the United States from January-May 2006.  The meetings reflected geographic differences, diverse populations, and a balance among urban and rural groups, and centered on four vital questions: what kinds of benefits and services should be included, how care should be delivered, how health coverage should be financed, and what tradeoffs people were willing to make.

Kaiser Family Foundation. Nov 2004. 2003 Health Insurance Survey.
This survey examines the public's level of satisfaction with their insurance coverage, their expectations of health insurance, the role of costs and other factors in health insurance decision-making, and attitudes toward employer-sponsored coverage. It also explores people's opinions about several alternative health insurance plans that are currently under consideration and explores how they might respond to these new options.

Kaiser Family Foundation. Kaiser Health Tracking Poll: Election 2008.
In March 2007, the Kaiser Family Foundation began conducting a new series of tracking polls on the public’s views of health reform and the presidential candidates’ positions on health care. Through the Kaiser Health Tracking Poll: Election 2008, Kaiser is tracking changes in the saliency of health as a political issue and policy priority, what the public’s priorities are for a health reform plan, and whether any candidates are breaking through with the public with their health reform plan.

Kaiser Family Foundation. Updated Jan 2006. Kaiser HealthPoll Report: Public Opinion on the Uninsured.
When asked in an open-ended question to name the two most important health care issues for the government to address, over one-third (35%) name issues related to health care costs, and nearly two in ten (17%) name issues related to access to care. In addition, three-quarters think that increasing the number of Americans with health insurance is a very important issue for the President and Congress to deal with.

Health Poll Search is a searchable archive of public opinion questions on health issues that allows users to know what Americans think about health issues, as well as what Americans have thought about health issues over time.
